Default Rawlins prison hires more guards in weak economy

CHEYENNE, Wyo. -
Recent tough economic times and the evaporation of jobs in Wyoming’s energy industry have made working at the state prison in Rawlins a more attractive proposition.
Steve Lindly, deputy director of the Wyoming Department of Corrections, says about 40 cadets set to graduate from a training class will likely fill the 21 vacancies at Rawlins this summer.
The department has struggled for years to fill job vacancies for correctional officers at the prison. Until recently, the area’s booming energy industry offered higher-paying jobs and drove up housing prices.
That situation led to chronic understaffing at Rawlins and mandatory overtime for officers to cover shifts. But now, with the number of drilling rigs working in the state falling, many energy jobs have disappeared and job vacancies at the prison are filling up.
Dee Garrison, president of the 75-member Wyoming Association of Correctional Employees union, says many new employees from Michigan are working at Rawlins.
Lindly says the department is also recruiting in Michigan, California and the South to fill 239 positions at the Torrington prison that’s scheduled to open early next year.
Department of Corrections spokeswoman Melinda Brazzale said in April that the Wyoming agency has hired 179 people from Michigan since 2006.
Michigan is planning to close several prisons to save money. Officials there say more than 1,000 corrections employees may be laid off.
