Maximise Energy Savings With PowerSave Options


12/04/09 - Champion Compressors has launched its new ‘PowerSave Options’ suite - a selection of energy-saving systems that can be factory-fitted to any compressor in the company’s range. PowerSave Options allows users to customise their air compressor with specific energy-saving features best suited to their application. Incorporating a selection of air-filtration and heat-recovery systems, as well as various air-end and drive configurations, PowerSave Options provides industry with unmatched energy-saving choice and flexibility.
Many of Champion’s PowerSave Options systems can be retrofitted to existing compressors, while all of the company’s energy-saving systems are easily incorporated into its new off-the-shelf units or its fully engineered customised compressors.
“Industry often faces the dilemma of which energy-saving features will provide them with optimum value in terms of reliability, longevity, efficiency, capital costs and payback period,” said Champion Compressors national sales and marketing manager, Dino Alessio. “It’s often not viable to include the full suite of power-saving options with every compressor. PowerSave Options gives the user the flexibility to select only those features that will produce energy savings for their specific application.”
PowerSave Options includes a shielded separator pre-filter and a cyclonic air-intake filter that can be selected in isolation or as a combination. “The cyclonic filters used in Champion’s compressors are amongst the biggest on the market,” said Alessio. “Blocked filters are a very real threat, given the hot, dusty and humid conditions prevalent throughout Australia. Our cyclonic air filters have been specifically engineered to minimise blockages and the resulting inefficiencies that these will cause.”
According to Alessio, additional energy efficiencies may be realised by specifying modulating control, a variable output air-end or a variable speed drive--all PowerSave Options alternatives. “Each of these systems--when properly matched to the appropriate application--will deliver energy and cost savings,” he said. “There is no ‘one size fits all’. Champion Compressors can determine which solution-set best meets the user’s requirements, and ensure that the unit we supply will be the most efficient compressor for the job.”
Furthermore, energy efficiencies can be improved by the PowerSave Options heat-recovery systems--which recover waste heat for re-use by either the compressor itself, or by external processes such as process water heating. “Compressors will typically produce air at 30 degrees Celsius, but this is cooled in the driers and filters to around 18 degrees Celsius, effectively taking energy out of the air,” Alessio explained. “Our regenerative-air system uses waste heat generated by the compressor to re-heat the newly produced compressed air. For every three degrees the compressed air can be heated up, there is a corresponding increase in power efficiency of one per cent. If the compressed air can be heated from 18 degrees to 50 degrees, a ten per cent energy saving can be realised.”
All Champion’s compressors are equipped with Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS)-compliant motors, with further premium-efficiency motors also available. “In the current environmental and economic climate, every company wants to cut its energy consumption and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions,” said Alessio. “Champion Compressors’ PowerSave Options initiative is leading the industry in the provision of compressors that are purpose-designed to minimise power usage; whatever the application, Champion Compressors can provide the most energy-efficient solution.”
