Atlas Copco Gas and Process wins large order for LNG market

Proving its position as a global market innovator, Atlas Copco Gas and Process has
won a large order for the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) market. The order is for
four companders – machines which combine both compressor and expander
functionalities.
They will be installed on LNG carriers built by Samsung Heavy Industries in a project
commissioned by the BG Group. Working with BG, Atlas Copco developed an optimized
gas handling system for Dual Fuel, Diesel Electric (DFDE) vessels. The machines
represent a crucial part of the customized reliquefaction system and will give BG full
flexibility and help maximize the valuable gas cargo. The companders are set for delivery
in the third quarter of 2009.
The LNG reliquefaction systems aboard the tankers are the driving force in BG’s effort to
increase fuel efficiency and reduce cost as the value of natural gas continues to rise. The
company’s tankers feature a Dual Fuel, Diesel Electric (DFDE) propulsion system, a very
fuel-efficient technology. This marks the first time that a DFDE vessel has been equipped
with a reliquefaction system.
“Atlas Copco has a long-standing history of developing highly-efficient solutions for its
customers—this is the latest example,” says Dré Schmitz, President of the Gas and
Process Division. ”This project is an innovative response to the heightening issue of
growing natural gas value.”
With the compander at its heart, the reliquefaction system was jointly development by
Atlas Copco Gas and Process and Norway-based marine specialist Hamworthy Gas
Systems.
