Results

The rotary steerable system drilled the entire 8,333 ft of hole in just 62 h for an average penetration rate of 134.4 ft/h. The PowerDrive system produced a clean hole that reduced sticking problems and maintained a smooth trajectory that allowed the liner to be run successfully.

Rotary steerable drilling cuts days from rig time

The rotary steerable system drilled the entire 8333 ft of hole in just 62 hr for an average penetration rate of 134.4 ft/hr.

While drilling at these high penetration rates, the PowerDrive system also produced a clean hole that reduced sticking problems and maintained a smooth trajectory that allowed the liner to be run successfully.

Drilling time reduced by half for Gulf of Mexico well


A drilling program using the PowerDrive 900 system met all objectives, achieving completion in 19 days, compared to the 79-day average for similar wells, at a rate of only 12.9 days per 10,000 ft, compared with the similar-well average of 54.2 days.

A Gulf of Mexico client using the PowerDrive 900 rotary steerable system and an RS130 bit from Schlumberger reduced rig time by 60 days compared with the average conventional drilling time for a similar well.

The plan first called for building the 12¼-in section to an inclination of 23° and correcting to an azimuth of 290°. Once this was accomplished, the plan specified turning the wellbore to a heading of 330°. This tangent would be held until the 95.8 -in casing point was reached, at which time the wellbore would be turned to a 356° azimuth.

The PowerDrive 900 tool was initially programmed with a gravity toolface setting of 248º and was steered 40% of the time. In the course of drilling this interval, 13 downlinks were made over 294 min, enabling the client to make trajectory modifications to stay within the well parameters.

Compared with the best time for a conventionally drilled offset well, drilling time with the PowerDrive 900 system was cut by 21—days.a reduction of more than half. This was also 60 days faster than the average time for similar wells.
