Case Study: Rotary Steerable System Speeds Directional Drilling for Gulf of Mexico Operator

Challenge
A Gulf of Mexico operator needed to drill a highly deviated well and meet stringent directional objectives rapidly and cleanly.

Solution
The well was drilled in 19 d using a PowerDrive 900 rotary steerable system, days faster than the average time required for comparable wells drilled conventionally. ROP was 32.3 ft/h—more than four times faster than the similar-well average of 7.7 ft/h.

Results
All directional objectives were met while saving 60 d of rig time.

Precise-steering

Precise steering, improved penetration with full-rotation system
Full rotation of the entire drillstring at uniform speed provided the answer for exceptional ROP and efficiency that resulted in substantial drilling savings. A Gulf of Mexico operator drilled a well in 19 d using a PowerDrive 900 rotary steerable system. That was days faster than the average time required for comparable wells drilled conventionally. It was also 21 d faster than the best-ever time for a conventionally drilled offset well. ROP was 32.3 ft/h—over four times faster than the similar-well average of 7.7 ft/h.

Leading-edge technology for all directional drilling environments
The plan called for the 121/4-in section to be built to an inclination of 23º and corrected to an azimuth of 290º. At this point, the wellbore was turned to a heading of 330º. This tangent was held until the 95/8-in casing point was reached; then the wellbore was turned to a 356º azimuth. All directional objectives were met while saving 60 d of rig time.
