Water crisis looms in capital due to canal closure

NEW DELHI: Most parts of south, west and central Delhi will have to go without water on December 18 and 19 due to the closure of a canal that provides water to the Haiderpur and Nangloi water treatment plants (WTP). According to sources, the Delhi sub-branch canal that supplies water to the WTPs has to be closed to carry out some construction work.

Water to affected parts that include central west, northwest, west, southwest Delhi, Naraina, Delhi Cantt and NDMC south Delhi would be supplied in the morning. After that supply would resume only by Saturday evening.

‘‘The system needs to be closed by 4 am on Friday and would be shut for 24 hours. After that, it would take a few hours for the water to reach the WTPs and another few hours to treat it and resume the supply.

We are hoping that by Saturday evening or latest by Saturday night we would be able to start the supply,’’ said a senior DJB official.

Under Commonwealth Games work, treated effluent from the Rithala sewage treatment plant (STP) has to be supplied to the Bawana power plant. ‘‘For that, we need to lay pipes that would be crossing the canal.

A barrel like structure would be laid through the canal through which the pipes would pass. That part of the canal would be closed and another structure created over it so that water can pass through. The work will be undertaken by the Haryana Irrigation Department on a stretch of canal that is close to Bawana,’’ revealed officials.
