Sandvik launches new pilot bits for more efficient raise boring

The introduction of Sandvik RR880 represents a new range of pilot bits for raise boring, given a new design to increase bit life and productivity, and reduce cost per meter.

Most raise boring applications begin with the drilling of a pilot hole. The general length of a pilot hole varies from 30 - 1000 meters, with standard drill pipes of 1.5 meter length. The time and cost involved in pulling the pipes out from a deep pilot hole is significant and the service life of pilot bits is therefore crucial when it comes to keeping down cost and time for any raise boring project.

One of the main reasons for changing bits in the hole is gage wear. Consequently, in order to extend the service life of the pilot bits, a lot of the development work Sandvik has made on the new bit design has focused on improving gage protection. The new Sandvik RR880 premium pilot bits provide both durability and hole straightness and up to 35% longer bit life than its predecessor, substantially reducing the time and cost for changing tools.

"With the new Sandvik RR880 pilot bits, you can drill longer between bit changes. Fewer bit changes means shorter project times and increased profit at the end of the day", says Göran Strand, Product Line Manager, Sandvik Mining.

As a leading supplier to the mining industry, Sandvik’s full offering of rock tools delivers the best combination for all for raise boring and blind boring up/down, and for both vertical and horizontal drilling. The system features a wide range of reaming heads in a number of sizes and types, suitable for any raise boring or reaming applications. Highly trained, expert engineers from Sandvik are equipped to provide the right parts and service for safe operation, low operating costs and long service life.
