BASF opens technical laboratory for mining applications in South Africa

BASF, a leading chemical company, has opened a laboratory in Johannesburg, South Africa, to offer specialist services to mining firms in Africa.

The lab is located at the site of MINTEK, a South African research organisation for mineral processing and extractive metallurgy.

The technical laboratory will enable BASF to provide technical service for mining clients on solid-liquid separation, hydrometallurgy, flotation, agglomeration and tailings management.

BASF Business Center South Africa and Sub-Sahara head Dieter Kovar said that Africa is 'a vast continent with a wealth of raw materials and a growing population and its growing economy offers enormous potential for the company'.

"Through establishing a stronger local presence and more intensive strategic collaborations we will be able to even further support our customers and to enhance BASF's market position," Kovar added.

African has about 30% of the total mineral deposits in the world - about 40% of bauxite, nearly 40% of uranium, 40% of gold, almost 90% of diamonds, 45% of chromite, 80% of manganese, 55% of cobalt and nearly 75% of platinum, as reported by the Independent Online.

MINTEK CEO Abiel Mngomezulu said the new BASF laboratory is an important development for cooperation in mining projects in the continent.

"Bringing together existing competences and assets will provide much needed innovative solutions for the mining industry," Mngomezulu added.

Despite the substantial deposit of mineral reserves in the continent, the key challenges faced by mining firms are to find high-quality ores and mine them sustainably, and this is where BASF intends to step in with innovative solutions for the whole value chain in mineral processing.

BASF Europe, Middle East Africa (EMEA) Global Mining Solutions Regional Business Management Dr Michael Gotsche said, "With this new laboratory we are now closer to our customers and can further improve our technical service."
