Mattson Intertool - Alternative Blasting Methods, Including the Rock Cracker

The Rock Cracker

The Rock Cracker is a non-explosive rock-splitting tool that makes use of the technology of motive force. This block is approximately 3m³.

Mattson Intertool is a specialist in alternative blasting methods and is active throughout the world. Mattson Intertool is the proud inventor of the Rock Cracker, a safe method of splitting rocks. In addition, we have the exclusive representation in Switzerland of the Cardox System.

After the borehole is drilled, it is filled with water and the cracker cartridges and tee-piece are inserted.

The Rock Cracker is a non-explosive rock-splitting tool that makes use of the technology of motive force. A device filled with a motive medium cartridge generates a pressure impulse in the device. The pressure impulse is transmitted by means of a path into an incompressible fluid column (water of gel) situated in a pre-drilled hole in the rock.

The success of the system is due to the special technology of the motive force being used. The unique qualities of the motive force and the cartridge generate a rapidly advancing force wave. This impulse pressure starts the spread of the fracture surfaces in the direction on the stress concentrations and the next free surface. The static pressure developed by the motive medium generates a further mechanical pressure in the rock where by the rock bursts. The direction of the break can be controlled by the arrangement of the drilling or the indentation of the hole.

Why use Rock Cracker?

  • 1.   No blasting licence required
  • 2.   Safe and simple operation
  • 3.   No restrictions as regards storage (explosives magazine)
  • 4.   No transport restrictions for vehicle or driver (transport permission, vehicle equipment or special 5.   third party insurance)
  • 6.   Very little shock / vibration
  • 7.   No crack protocols (authorities, owner or contractor)
  • 8.   No seismographic instruments in use
  • 9.   No creeping current risk in the vicinity of trains or high voltage lines
  • 10. Can be used safely in poor weather
  • 11. Alternative for conventional blasting (stemming hose firing, Nonel, Aetonoex - shot detonating cord)
  • 12. Little noise (can be used without problems for hospitals, homes, clinics and housing estates)
  • 13. Little waste gas (no poison gases; can also be used in enclosed spaces as well as in caverns, shafts, ditches, trenches, etc.)
  • 14. Low flight velocity and therefore no pressure wave
  • Almost no interruption of work
  • 15. No laborious cover of the blasting area and protection of the surroundings
  • 16. No warning and control of the surrounding buildings necessary
  • No laborious closing off of streets and paths

The Rock Cracker is a compact, economical and transportable piece of equipment that can be used for splitting and breaking stones and blocks of rock when reducing rocks, as well as for splitting reinforced concrete. The absolutely comfortable handling, as well as low operating costs, result in the Rock Cracker being the preferred equipment when rock is being broken.

After firing, the result: the block was split successfully into several pieces with the Rock Cracker, without requiring a blasting licence.
