Challenge

Drill a 45º tangent section to planned target depth of 9,821 ft for 13 3/8-in casing in deep water.

Solution

Drill 17-in section using a PowerDrive X5 1100 rotary steerable system (RSS) with arcVISION Array Resistivity Compensated tool, PowerPulse MWD telemetry system, and 17-in reamer.

Results

Successfully reached target depth 6 days ahead of AFE despite hole problems, saving USD 1.8 million.

Get a quality borehole

In May 2006, Shell Exploration & Production Company (SEPCo) needed to drill a 45º tangent section to a planned target depth of 9,821 ft for 13 3/8-in casing in the A-18 well of the Bullwinkle Project in the Gulf of Mexico.

Despite hole problems resulting from an unconsolidated formation encountered early in the well, the team was able to make up considerable time in the next hole section using a PowerDrive X5 1100 rotary steerable system with an arcVISION Array Resistivity Compensated tool, a PowerPulse telemetry system, and a 17-in reamer.

The 4,515-ft run was performed in a total of 68.3 h, with 21.9 h drilling, 46.4 h circulating, and an average drilling ROP of 205 ft/h. The PowerDrive X5 system delivered a quality borehole, enabling a problem-free casing run at the end of the section.

Through superior drilling performance and improved borehole quality that facilitated running casing, the PowerDrive X5 1100 RSS helped Shell make up considerable lost time from early hole problems, ultimately delivering the well 6 days ahead of AFE, saving USD 1.8 million.
