Govt to lay pipelines for Narmada water supply

RAJKOT: There is reason to cheer for residents of this city plagued by water woes. The state government, after receiving several representations

from Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has chalked out a three-pronged strategy to supply Narmada waters to the city.

According to RMC officials, the government is contemplating laying three pipelines to connect the stretches of Narmada canal between Dhrangadhra and Maliya and Botad and Bhadar with the city.

"At present, Rajkot gets 40 million litres per day (MLD). After this step, the city is likely to receive 75 MLD," said an official from RMC's water works department.

The first stage of the government's plan envisages constructing a pumping station near Navada in Botad taluka to divert Narmada water flow from Vallabhipur to Gondal and from there to Rajkot through Bhadar pipeline. The total cost of this project is pegged at Rs 175 crore.

Till the commissioning of the project, the government had authorized RMC to keep it under supervision. Apart from this, Maliya and Dhrangadhra will be linked through the canal, the tender process of which is said to have been initiated, said sources.
