PowerDrive Xceed provides accurate drainage placement in unconsolidated formations

Challenge

In the challenging thin-bed, unconsolidated Girassol formation of Angola, TotalFinaElf conventional rotary steering tools had been unsuccessful in delivering required doglegs and did not allow azimuthal density neutron logging while sliding.

Solution

The Schlumberger PowerDrive Xceed rotary steerable system (RSS) can produce high dogleg severity (DLS) in difficult well designs, and therefore was selected to geosteer in this formation. Real-time adnVISION Azimuthal Density Neutron tool images were also highly useful for seismic correlation when drilling.

Results

The well was drilled according to plan. The combination of maximized hydraulics and efficient geosteering led to accurate drainage placement and excellent wellbore quality even in high DLS.

A durable special-application tool for difficult rotary drilling, the PowerDrive Xceed system demonstrates major advantages where externally steered mechanisms reach their performance limits. Full rotation of the entire drillstring at uniform speed yields exceptional rates of penetration and efficient hole cleaning. It also can produce high dogleg severity (DLS) in difficult well designs.

The PowerDrive Xceed system is Schlumberger’s rotary steerable system to achieve very high DLS in unconsolidated formations. This system was selected for a well in the challenging thin-bed Girassol formation of Angola, based on the need to increase drilling performance, optimize drain placement, and enhance hole quality for running screens and logs. Used to geosteer in this formation, the PowerDrive Xceed fully rotational rotary steerable system consistently delivered doglegs of more than 4.5° per 30 m for TotalFinaElf.

Using the PowerDrive Xceed system offered consistent dogleg capabilities derived from a deflection principle based on bottomhole assembly curvature. Because the tool is not as dependent on the borehole for deflection, efficiency in openhole sidetracks is possible. In addition, commands are made while drilling, reducing time needed to downlink.

Real-time adnVISION Azimuthal Density Neutron tool images are highly useful for seismic correlation when drilling in the Girassol formation. Using conventional rotary steering tools to deliver required doglegs in this unconsolidated formation had been unsuccessful. Conventional drilling systems will not allow azimuthal density neutron logging while sliding.

The PowerDrive Xceed solution for rotary steering applications accomplished both the required DLS and high-quality adnVISION images during drilling. Drain placement and acquisition objectives were achieved while maintaining hole quality. The unique fully rotating PowerDrive Xceed technology was used to respond quickly to changes in formation dip using continuous inclination 4 m from the bit.
