'Rain water harvesting can meet 21% of water needs'

Only 479 of the total 6.44 lakh properties in Pune have rain water harvesting, a report prepared by Pune-based NGO Green Energy Foundation and submitted to mayor Mohansingh Rajpal recently, said.

This when 21% of the total water demand in the Pune Municipal Corporation limits can be met through harvesting rain water, the report called 'Harvesting rain water to meet the water shortage in Pune', added. With surface runoff meeting 11% of the water demand, rain water can cater to around 32% of the total demand in the civic limits, it said.

The report, which highlighted the apathy for water management in the city which is facing 30% water cut, also recommended making rain water harvesting mandatory for all new constructions. Nearly 60-70% of the water used by an individual can be recycled and reused. Using drinking water for all purposes was the main problem and by using recycled water for washing cars and landscaping the requirement would fall by 40%, the report said. It suggested suitable artificial recharging structures.

Sharmila Oswal, president of Green Energy Foundation, said the study took six months. "India's annual rainfall is among the top six countries, but we do not conserve water. The crisis in the city cannot be attributed to just scanty rainfall and distribution losses, but also to the lack of initiative by citizens to harvest water. The civic body should have a rain water harvesting cell with a surveillance committee. Other NGOs and citizens can monitoring it and make it accountable. We can provide technical support. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation may also be willing to support it," she said.

Rajpal told TOI that an action plan will be prepared and submitted to the general body.
