Fastest football kick by a machine

On Saturday 19 June 2010, Japanese football fans gathered at Olympic Plaza of National Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo to witness the fastest football kick achieved by a machine.

The machine is called Castrol Ichi-go (Castrol Number one) and was created by Castrol together with Ogilvy Japan to support the national team’s participation in the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa.  It is driven by an engine and has a steel leg to deliver a free kick excess of 200 km/h.

Despite the hot and sticky weather, the audience, many of whom dressed in the blue Japanese football shirts, waited patiently to see the super football kick.  When Castrol Ichi-go finally kicked the ball, it went straight into the goal and achieved the 225 km/h speed.  Everybody cheered in amazement.

Guinness World Records™ adjudicator Kaoru Ishikawa was on hand to verify the record. After carefully examining the measuring system using the speed trap of electronic timing lights, she presented the certificate to Mr Masakiyo Maezono, the former professional football player, who was involved in the project.
Castrol Ichi-go’s achievement must have contributed to the World Cup fever in Japan.  Congratulations!
