Upgrade for the wheeled digger

By ROGER HARRISON
JEDDAH: It is not easy to improve on a hammer or, one would have thought, such a standard piece of equipment as the wheeled digger, ubiquitous across construction sites worldwide. Liebherr, noted for the quality and ingenuity of its earthmoving and construction equipment, have done just that.

The already popular A 904 C Litronic excavator, which the company is to exhibit at the 2010 Bauma construction exhibition, has already made an appearance in Saudi Arabia and will be on show at the Saudi PMV show between March 7 and 9.
The practical aspect of the revised and upgraded A 904 C is the exceptional torsional rigidity of its already robust undercarriage. The centre section has been extended down to protect the complete travel gear assembly. This ingenious design approach, with the travel gear and undercarriage as a single integrated unit, ensures safe maneuverability on rough terrain.
Powered by a Liebherr diesel engine from the latest emission-optimized generation, the A 904 C Litronic develops its maximum output of 105 kW (143 hp) at an engine speed of only 1,800 rpm. For rapid response over the entire range of working movements, the Liebherr hydraulic pump has a delivery rate of 2 x 189 liters/min. Precisely matched Liebherr components are the key to maximum productivity in day-to-day operation on the construction site.
The A 904 C Litronic's excellent traction means rapid acceleration from a standstill, maximum speed on gradients and, in conjunction with the new undercarriage, excellent rough-terrain travel, with safe, powerful maneuvering even when conditions on the construction site are unfavorable.
The two axles have maintenance-free wet-type multi-plate brakes acting directly on the wheel hubs. They ensure that the machine stands safely without movement even if the outrigger supports are not in use. For the dozer blade, which can also be used to enhance the R 904 C Litronic's stability, a piston rod protection is available as an optional extra. That keeps stones and soil away effectively and prolongs component life. Another convenient feature is the easily operated pushbutton superstructure lock.
The A 904 C Litronic has a large cab with an air-sprung Liebherr seat that can be adjusted to suit the operator's weight, a welcome feature adapted from heavy goods vehicles. The superstructure incorporates large window areas and rounded-off edges for improved visibility and a reliable view of the entire construction site. Automatic air conditioning with sensors, essential in the Kingdom, keeps the cab climate stable at comfortable working temperatures for pleasant working conditions without risk of fatigue.

Liebherr offers the A 904 C Litronic with no fewer than eight boom and nine dipper stick versions, the latter with pipe-work in protected positions across all the options.
